FED: Asylum seekers on hunger strike in Adelaide police cells
SYDNEY, April 6 AAP - Thirty asylum seekers who last week escaped from the WoomeraDetention Centre were reportedly on hunger strike yesterday.
The asylum seekers were in police cells in Adelaide where they have been held sincetheir recapture six days ago, The Sydney Morning Herald reported today.
Lawyers for the men said they were being held under harsh and cruel conditions andhad been denied a change of clothes or a toothbrush.
The asylum seekers had been on hunger strike since Thursday and harmed themselves,with one man pulling the skin from his mouth and feet, the paper said.
The lawyers yesterday sought urgent action in the South Australian Supreme Court againstAustralasian Correctional Management, which has been guarding the men in the Adelaidewatchhouse, the paper said.
The action sought that they be held in conditions that were fair and in accord withinternational obligations.
