Fed: NZ defence force getting better but stil has gaps

A new study says the New Zealand Defence Force is becoming more modern and capable
.. but it's being stretched by current operations .. and there are significant capability
gaps.

A paper released today by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute says New Zealand's
unable to conduct major military operations independently .. so it needs robust defence
relationships.

The relationship with Australia remains solid .. although Australian officials have
at times queried whether New Zealand is pulling its weight.

The NZDF currently numbers around 13 thousand 500 .. including nine thousand fulltime personnel.
