Boldly go into cyberspace, stores urged.

A Swinburne University academic has urged retailers to explore new possibilities in electronic commerce. Nanette Carter believes that many retailers are limited by their perception of retail as a store-based concept. Carter is critical of the many "e-tail" sites that do not allow online purchases, and encourages business owners to create a fresh and innovative presence on the Internet. The graphics of a web site contribute significantly to the overall appeal of the store, and over-used music and animated features can often deter potential customers.
